Effort vs. Results

When a person goes into a restaurant they often care less about how much work a person put into making their food order as much as how the food looks, smells and tastes. In contrast, when a relative (such as a mother) cooks a meal for that person he will tell them what a good job they did, even if the dish didn’t turn out like it was supposed to.

Why do we praise a relative’s poor cooking but become upset by a poorly made dish from a restaurant? When do you know that it is important to praise a person for their effort and not for the product? In contrast, when do you know that it is more important to praise a person for the product then for their effort? Which would you prefer people to praise you for – your effort or the product of your hard work? Why?
